Transcend TS8XDVDS-K Slim External Black DVD Writer

The Transcend TS8XDVDS-K is an ultra-slim external DVD writer designed for laptops, ultrabooks or desktop setups that lack an internal optical drive. It features a sleek 13.9 mm thick chassis, measuring about 142.8 × 148.0 mm and weighing around 264 g. The interface is USB-powered (mini USB to USB Type-A) so no external power adapter is needed, making it very portable and convenient for on-the-go use. On the performance side it supports up to 8× read/write for DVD±R, and up to 24× read/write for CD-R/RW media. It also supports a wide variety of media formats including CD-R/RW, DVD±R, DVD±RW, DVD±R DL (dual layer), DVD-RAM and even M-Disc in some listings. OS compatibility is broad (Windows 7/8/10, Vista/XP, Mac OS X 10.7+), and it comes bundled with [or supports download of] the CyberLink Power2Go/MediaShow software for media burning tasks. The drive offers tray-loading mechanism, and a relatively fast access time (~140–160ms for CD/DVD) in its class. Overall, it’s a solid addition for those needing disc burning or playback capabilities on machines that lack optical drives, especially thanks to its slim form factor and plug-and-play simplicity.
